Raphael Chikukwa took up the post of Executive Director in 2020. He is the Commissioner of the Zimbabwe Pavilion at the Venice Biennale and leads the Gallery's national programme across Harare, Bulawayo and Mutare.

The Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation appoints the Board of Trustees. The Board consists of between five and eleven members and provides strategic oversight of the Gallery's collections, exhibitions, education programmes and regional galleries.

Governance and legal status
Governance
The Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation appoints the Board of Trustees of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. The Board consists of between five and eleven members, and provides strategic oversight of the Gallery's collections, exhibitions, education programmes and regional galleries in Bulawayo and Mutare.
Legal status
The National Gallery of Zimbabwe was established by an Act of Parliament in 1952 and operates under the National Gallery of Zimbabwe Act (Chapter 25:09) and the Public Entities Corporate Governance Act (Chapter 10:31). It functions independently of government while remaining accountable to Parliament, with the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation as its principal regulator.
